Say Goodbye to Painful Wisdom Teeth
The term wisdom teeth refer to our back molars which are the last adult teeth to emerge. They typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 21. As these teeth come through, many people experience a variety of problems, as they do not have sufficient space to accommodate further teeth.
In these cases, surgery is often recommended. Here at The Dental Team, we perform wisdom teeth removal under sedation, which helps to block pain and allow our patients to relax and remain calm throughout the procedure.

Reasons for Wisdom Teeth Removal
Not everyone will require wisdom teeth removal, particularly if they are:
- Healthy
- Fully erupted
- Positioned correctly
- Able to be cleaned without difficulty
However, there are situationswhen wisdom teeth removal is the best solution. These include:
- Patient is experiencing pain
- Repeated infection of soft tissue
- Damage to nearby teeth
- Fluid-filled sacs (cysts)
- Gum disease
- Tumours
- Extensive tooth decay
How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth removal will first involve the administration of sedation and local anesthesia. Therefore, you will not feel any pain and will have limited memory of the procedure itself. From here, the dentist will:
- Make an incision in the gum tissue
- Remove the bone blocking access to the tooth’s root
- Remove the tooth
- Clean the site
- Stitch the wound closed
- Place gauze over the extraction site
Following the procedure, the dentist will advise on pain management over the coming hours and days.
If you are experiencing any of the above issues, it is best that you speak to one of our dentists for personalized advice.
Quick wisdom-tooth recovery guide
Removing a wisdom tooth leaves a small surgical site that heals best when the surrounding tissue stays clean, swelling is controlled, and—most importantly—the extraction socket’s clot stays intact. Learn more about protecting the blood clot during recovery and keep the following checklist handy:
- Control bleeding: Bite on sterile gauze for 30 minutes, then replace if light oozing persists; the pressure helps the clot set.
- Minimise swelling: Apply an ice pack to your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) for the first 24 hours.
- Manage pain proactively: Take prescribed or OTC pain relievers on schedule—don’t wait for discomfort to spike.
- Rinse gently: After 24 hours, start warm salt-water baths; tilt and let the rinse roll over the site instead of swishing or spitting hard.
- Choose soft foods: Stick to yogurt, smoothies (no straw), mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs for 48 hours, then add easy-chew items like pasta.
- Avoid suction and pressure: Skip smoking, vaping, straws, and forceful spitting for at least 72 hours to keep the clot seated.
- Keep the rest of your mouth clean: Brush normally but use an ultra-soft brush near the socket.
- Limit activity: Light walking is fine after 24 hours; postpone heavy workouts for 3–5 days.
- Know the red flags: Sharp bone pain, foul odor, fever, or persistent bleeding warrants a prompt call to your dentist
