What is a Dental Implant?

Chew on Both Sides Again Without Thinking About the Gap

A dental implant is a small titanium post that your dentist places in the jawbone where a tooth root used to be. Over the next few months, the bone grows around the post and holds it firmly. Then a custom crown goes on top, colour-matched to the teeth beside it. One implant can replace one tooth, and a few implants can hold a bridge or a full denture in place.

Because the post sits in the bone, it doesn't lean on the teeth next to it the way a bridge does, and it doesn't slip the way a loose denture can. It also gives your jawbone something to work against, which helps slow the bone loss that follows a missing tooth.

Not everyone is ready for an implant on day one. Gum disease or thin bone may need treatment first, and your dentist at our Milton locations will tell you honestly if a bridge or denture is the better fit for you.

Who this is for

Anyone with a missing tooth, a tooth that can't be saved, or a denture that won't stay put, who wants a fixed replacement that feels like their own teeth.

You might be a good fit for an implant if...

You're missing one or more teeth

A gap from an old extraction, an injury, or a tooth that cracked past the point of repair.

A tooth needs to come out

Your dentist has said a tooth can't be saved, and you want a plan for what goes in its place.

Your denture slips or rubs

Implants can anchor a denture so it stays put through a whole meal.

Your bridge or old work is failing

A loose bridge, or a tooth under an old crown that keeps breaking down, may be a good time to talk about an implant.

You're working around the gap

You chew on one side, skip steak or apples, or keep your mouth closed in photos.

How it works

What Happens at Your Dental Implant Appointments

Implants take a few visits spread over a few months. Here's each step, from your first exam to your new tooth.

1

We Check Your Teeth, Gums, and Bone

An exam, X-rays, and impressions show whether your jawbone can hold an implant and what needs to happen first.

3

The Implant Goes In

With the area numbed, your dentist places the post in the jawbone. Most people feel pressure, not pain.

5

Your New Tooth Goes On

Once the implant has healed, a small connector and your custom crown, bridge, or denture are attached.

2

You Get a Clear Plan and Cost

Your dentist explains how many implants you need, the timeline, any prep work like a bone graft, and the cost of each stage before you book.

4

The Bone Heals Around It

Over roughly 3 to 6 months, the bone bonds to the post. You may wear a temporary tooth in the meantime.

6

You Leave Knowing How to Care for It

We check your bite and show you how to clean around the implant, so it stays healthy for years.

What Patients Ask Us First

Honest Answers Before You Book

The questions that stop most people from calling, answered straight.

Will it hurt?

Not during placement. The area is fully numbed, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Afterward, expect some soreness and swelling for a few days, which over-the-counter pain relief handles for most patients. Here's more on what implant pain actually feels like.

What will this cost, and does insurance or CDCP cover it?

Cost depends on how many teeth you're replacing, whether you need an extraction or bone graft first, and what goes on top, so we quote after your exam.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan doesn't cover implants, but it can help with other parts of your care. We'll check your coverage and walk you through every cost before you agree to anything.

How long does the whole process take?

Usually several months from start to finish, and most of that is healing time, not chair time. If you need a bone graft first, add a few more months. Your dentist will give you a timeline at your exam.

Do I need to already be a patient here?

No. New patients are welcome at all three Milton locations. Book or call, and we'll start with an exam.

Cost and coverage

What Dental Implants Cost in Milton

How cost works at our Milton locations, and what insurance and CDCP will and won't pay for.

What does it cost?

Cost depends on how many implants you need, whether an extraction or bone graft comes first, and whether the implant holds a crown, bridge, or denture. We quote after your exam, and you'll know the cost of each stage before it starts.

Does insurance cover this?

Many private dental plans pay for part of an implant, while others leave it out. We'll check your plan before treatment so you know your share up front.

Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

Does CDCP Cover Dental Implants? The Honest Answer.

No. The CDCP Dental Benefits Guide lists implants and all implant-related work, including bone grafts, as exclusions that can't be approved on appeal. We'd rather you hear that now than at the front desk.

The Dental Team is a registered CDCP provider, and the plan can still help with parts of replacing a missing tooth.

What to expect after

Your Recovery After Implant Placement

Many people are back at work or school within a day or two. Here's what each stage usually looks like.

First 24 hours

Rest and keep it cool

Bite gently on gauze if there's bleeding. Ice your cheek 20 minutes on, 20 off, and stick to cool, soft foods.

Days 2 to 3

Swelling peaks, then eases

Rinse gently with warm salt water and chew on the other side while the area settles.

Days 4 to 7

Back to most meals

Most soreness fades. Ease back into regular meals, keeping hard and crunchy foods away from the implant.

Any time

When to call us

Pain that gets worse after day 3, swelling that keeps growing, a fever, or an implant that feels loose. Call and we'll see you.

Frequently asked questions

Questions About Dental Implants

Don't see your question? Call us and we'll answer it before you book.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Most adults with healthy gums and enough jawbone are good candidates. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, and active gum disease can slow healing, so your dentist may treat those first. Your exam and X-rays will show where you stand, and our guide to who makes a good implant candidate covers the details.

A dental bone graft can rebuild the area before the implant goes in. It adds a few months of healing to your timeline, and your dentist will tell you at your exam if you need one.

No. The Canadian Dental Care Plan excludes implants and all implant-related procedures, including bone grafts. It can still cover eligible exams, X-rays, extractions, and standard dentures, with your share based on household income.

With daily brushing, flossing, and regular checkups, implants can last for many years. The crown on top may need replacing at some point due to normal wear.

It depends on your mouth and budget. An implant stands on its own, a bridge is anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap, and a denture comes out for cleaning and usually costs less up front. Your dentist will walk you through all three.
