What is Emergency Dental Care?

Same-day care for tooth pain and dental issues that can't wait

Emergency dental care is same-day or next-day help for problems that affect your ability to eat, sleep, or get through your day.

It's not just for the most extreme cases. It covers anything where waiting for a routine appointment would make things worse: sudden pain, a broken tooth, a lost filling, or swelling that came out of nowhere.

At The Dental Team's Milton locations, patients are seen as quickly as possible, often the same day you call. No referral needed, and you don't need to already be a patient with us.

Who this is for

This is for anyone dealing with a sudden dental problem: a new issue, a worsening one, or something that's been building for a few days and finally became urgent.
You don't need to know exactly what's wrong. That's what we're here to find out.

You might need emergency dental care if...

Severe or persistent pain

Pain that wakes you up, makes it hard to focus, or has been getting worse over the last day or two

A sudden break or injury

A cracked, chipped tooth, or something that's come loose

Swelling or signs of infection

Swelling in your gum or jaw can signal an infection that needs same-day attention

Something fell out or failed

A crown, filling, or denture that's come loose or fallen out

Bleeding that won’t stop

Persistent bleeding after an injury that hasn't slowed after 30 minutes

5

We take care of it

2

Your dentist assesses your situation

Your dentist takes a close look to understand exactly what's happening and what needs to be done.

What Patients Ask Us First

Honest answers to the questions every patient is thinking

These are the questions that stop most people from calling. Here's where we stand on all of them.

What if I'm not sure it's a real emergency?

You don't need to self-diagnose before you call. If it's affecting your ability to eat, sleep, or focus, or it's gotten worse over the last day or two, it's worth a same-day look. Call and describe what's going on.

We'll tell you honestly whether it needs to be seen today or can wait for a regular appointment. You won't be turned away for asking.

What will this cost, and does CDCP or insurance cover it?

Costs depend on what's actually wrong, so we won't quote a number before we've seen you.

What we will do: check your CDCP eligibility or insurance coverage before any treatment starts, and walk you through the cost of your options before you agree to anything.

No treatment happens without you knowing the price first.

What if it's outside your open hours?

Our Milton locations have slightly different hours. Bronte Hill and Hillsview are open Monday to Thursday 9am to 8pm, and Saturdays 9am to 2pm. Forest Valley is open Monday and Tuesday 9am to 8pm, Wednesday and Thursday 9am to 5pm, and Saturdays 9am to 2pm, but is closed Fridays. All three are closed Sundays and long weekends.

If your emergency happens outside those hours, call us as soon as we're open and we'll prioritize you same-day.

Do I need to already be a patient here?

No. New patients are welcome for emergency visits, and you don't need a referral. We'll get your information when you call and get you seen as quickly as possible.

For anxious patients

It's okay to be nervous. A lot of our emergency patients are.

Dental anxiety is real and common, and it's one of the reasons people wait too long to get help, even when they're in pain. Here's what we actually do differently for patients who feel anxious during an emergency visit.

We listen before we do anything

Tell us what you're worried about specifically and we'll adjust our approach before your appointment starts.

You're in control

We agree on a stop signal before we begin. Raise your hand at any point and we pause immediately.

We go at your pace

We explain each step before doing it and never rush. If you need a minute, you get a minute.

Cost and coverage

What emergency dental care costs in Milton

Here's how cost works at our Milton clinic, and how your insurance or CDCP coverage applies before you arrive.

What does it cost?

Cost depends entirely on what's actually wrong, so we won't guess at a number before we've seen you. What we can tell you: same-day emergency walk-ins are welcome, and there's no extra charge for being seen the same day.

Payment is due at the time of your visit.

No surprise bills. The exact cost of your treatment is discussed and agreed with you before we begin. You will not be billed for anything you did not approve.

Does CDCP or insurance cover this?

If you're CDCP-eligible, emergency dental services are covered based on your household income (see coverage tiers below). If you have private dental insurance, most plans cover some portion of emergency treatment.

Either way, we'll help you understand your coverage and the expected cost before you're seen.

Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

CDCP covers emergency dental care. Here's exactly how much.

The Dental Team is a registered CDCP provider. If you're enrolled in the Canadian Dental Care Plan, emergency dental services are covered, but the amount depends on your household income and the specific treatment needed.

The biggest concern we hear from CDCP patients is balance billing: being charged more than what CDCP pays. We address this directly. We'll tell you the full cost and your exact out-of-pocket amount before any treatment begins. No surprises.

Coverage — household income under $70,000

100% of eligible costs covered

No co-payment required for most emergency procedures

Coverage — household income $70,000–$79,999

40% covered — 60% co-payment

What to expect after

Recovery and aftercare for emergency dental treatment

Recovery depends on what was actually treated, but here's an honest, general picture of what to expect so you can plan ahead and know what's normal.

First 2–4 hours

Still frozen

The anaesthetic is still working. Avoid eating on the frozen side. You may bite your cheek without realizing it.

Hours 4–24

Some soreness — normal

As the freezing wears off, the treated area may be tender. Over-the-counter pain relief handles this for most patients.

Day 2–3

Noticeably better

Soreness fades significantly for most people. Normal food and activities can usually resume, though some sensitivity may linger a few more days.

Day 4–7

Recovering well

Most straightforward emergency treatments are fully settled by now. More involved procedures may take longer. We'll cover your specific timeline before you leave.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about our Emergency Dental Services

If something isn't covered here, contact us — we're happy to answer any question before you book.

Can a dental infection or abscess actually be dangerous?

Yes, in rare cases. A dental infection that's left untreated can spread beyond the tooth and become serious, which is why we treat facial swelling, fever, or an abscess as same-day priorities rather than something to wait out. If you have swelling, a fever, or difficulty swallowing alongside tooth pain, call us right away or go to the nearest emergency room.

It depends on the symptoms. If it's painful, sensitive, or has a visible crack, it should be looked at same-day. If it's not painful and there's no swelling, it can usually wait for a regular appointment, but we'd rather you call and ask than guess.

Severe or worsening pain, a broken or knocked-out tooth, swelling, a lost crown or filling, or bleeding that won't stop. If you're not sure, call us and describe what's happening. We'll tell you honestly whether it needs to be seen today.

No. New patients are welcome for emergency visits.

If you're CDCP-eligible, emergency dental services are covered under the plan, though the amount depends on your household income (see coverage details above). If you have private dental insurance, most plans cover some portion of emergency treatment. Either way, we'll walk you through your coverage and the expected cost before any treatment begins.

Yes, we treat dental emergencies for children as well as adults. Our Brampton team includes dentists experienced with pediatric patients, so your child can be seen the same day, often at the same visit as another family member if needed.

We'll answer any remaining questions at your appointment. No commitment required.
